These wooden buttons were created by my husband Jeff in yellow cedar wood. Yellow cedar has such a pretty, light hue. He sanded these buttons and burned this beautiful cameo lady design onto each one (the design on the upper left button turned out a little darker than the others.) Then he took these buttons one step further and I'll let him tell you about the process here. From Jeff: "I always loved these cameo like designs and used to do a lot of scrimshaw of ones like this. I picked yellow cedar because it looks like ivory and got some good quality wood dye to make a border around it. It's a little tricky painting with the wood dye and not having it spread into the design, but a tiny little paintbrush made it possible (if I held my breath and kept a very steady hand). After painting it I gave it a few coats of natural shellac and then buffed it on a polishing wheel. I love the way they turned out."

(A note: we have not tried washing these buttons yet, so wash them at your own risk. The wood dye he used said it is water proof, and the buttons have several coats of protective natural shellac, but we have not personally tested that yet. These buttons would be well suited for projects that don't require washing.)

Pictured with blue yarn, these buttons would pair nicely with many different colors.

~Care Instructions~ Care for these buttons as you would wool: hand wash garment in cool water and lay flat to dry. If the wood should dry out from washing, a little walnut oil (or other natural oil) on a soft cloth works well to moisturize them. Oiling them will keep your buttons beautiful and protect them from drying out.
